With the advent of covid-19, we also saw a pandemic of home remedies circulating on social platforms as well. Everyone should be aware about the over dosage effects of home remedies. Many people started consuming more tulsi (Holy basil), haldi(turmeric), kali mirch(black pepper), dalchini(cinnamon), saunth(ginger powder), methi(Fenugreek) etc in the form of decoction or otherwise. While some consuming golden milk or chyawanprash, some started taking vitamin C, D and zinc supplements and some started having homeopathic or siddha medicines without consulting the concerned doctor.

As a consequence, vaidyas and doctors started getting patients with various ailments associated with the unmonitored and self-prescribed consumption of these herbs or supplements. You might be able to digest the fact that vitamins in excess may be harmful, but consuming tulsi, kali-mirch, haldi in excess can harm you too, you might find this shocking!!!!

To begin with the above mention herbs, most of these drugs are pungent in taste amd hot in potency. These are the most common over dosage effects of home remedies.

While using these products in moderation or recommended quality as per the advice of vaidya or doctor may not cause any harm, but consuming these products without knowing their dosage, method of preparation and consumption and their interaction with their ongoing medications could land you into serious trouble.

Over dosage of Chyawanprash

Next thing which is commonly being consumed by people is Chyawanprash. There are many misconceptions among masses  regarding it. People think it can be consumed at any time, in any disease condition. But, it is not so. If a person has decreases appetite, fever with recent onset, having Chyawanprash or golden milk in such a condition may aggravate the disease. This is just one of the various conditions in which it may backfire. Recently, i got a patient complaining of breathlessness which was just because of self-prescription of Chyawanprash without considering the factors and conditions in which it can be consumed.

Over dosage of Vitamins

Overdosage of Vitamin-C may cause diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and it may also lead to kidney stones as well. Similarly overdosage of vitamin-D causes nausea, vomiting, weakness, frequent urination and also kidney stones. Whereas, over dosage of zinc may lead to fever with chills, cough, headache and fatigue. That is why everyone must be aware of over dosage effects of home remedies.

It has been rightly said,  “सर्वत्र अति वर्जयेत्” i.e. excess of everything is forbidden. But, it is also true that everything is not meant for everyone as well. Since, everyone is made differently, the drug selection, dosage and duration of consumption varies from person to person. So it is always wise to consult a vaidya or the concerned doctor before consuming any medicine.
