Satnam Khattra demise case by ayurveda – by Dr. Rishi

On 30th August, 2020 I woke up to listen the news of Mr Satnam Khattra’s demise due to heart attack. It was a very sad demise. He was a body builder with undoubtedly the biggest biceps in India. He was just 31.  For me, it was sad to know as coincidentally I had watched his interview just a week ago. In that interview, he can be seen talking about his humongous diet. In his diet, there was a couple of things which bothered me as a Vaidya.

Satnam khattra’s demise reasons

Firstly, he used to consume food more at night and less during the day. Secondly, he mentioned about a drink that he was very fond of which he consumed daily. You will be shocked to know that he added 200 almonds and 200 resins in that drink. He also shared that he doesn’t drink it one go, but he used to consume it gradually sip by sip over a long period of time. Just on listening the composition of this drink, the interviewer took a break to warn the audience to not to try this at home as it is evidently not possible to digest that. Whenever we hear about the death of a body builder, we generally have a pre-conceived notion that the person must have died due to anabolic steroids, but one thing that people overlook is the diet the person is consuming, which could also be fatal. Shocked?

Let me tell you what Ayurveda has to say about method of consuming food. Though, there are a lot of intricate details mentioned regarding consumption of food, from the nature of the food to the quantity of food. But 3 things have been highlighted in regard to consumption of food which may lead to untimely death or life threatening diseases.

  1. Samashana – having wholesome and unwholesome food together is called Samashana. Pizza is a classic example of Samashana. While the vegetable toppings on it are wholesome for us to consume, the bread base is unwholesome. Having cold water with ghee is another example.
  2. Vishamashana- means to have food sometimes more or sometimes less than required, to eat ultimately, to eat before getting hungry or having food much after feeling the hunger to eat. For instance, today if shahi paneer is on plate you end up consuming 6 rotis with it, whereas if it is tori/louki you end up eating only 2 rotis with it. This is Vishamashana.
  3. Adhyashana– which means to eat before the previous meal gets digested. Generally, people have developed a habit to snack between meals.

So, these 3 factors hamper our metabolism and can cause various illness and can even lead to death in the long run or I should say it can cut short our long run of life.

In order to keep ourselves healthy, there are 5 take aways from this-

  1. Eat freshly cooked food. Preferably eat within an hour after the food is cooked. It should not be refrigerated and stored for next meal.
  2. Do not overeat, nor should you skip meals.
  3. Eat only when the previous meal is digested completely i.e. do not snack in between meals.
  4. It is best to have dinner before the sun sets. If you can’t follow that, then at least have dinner around 8pm.
  5. Do not drink refrigerated water. It’s best to have boiled and cooled water, it improved our metabolism.

It is high time now to gradually change our eating habits for good, to improve our health and stay safe from both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
